Day Lilies

Ethan lived on Tanner Street. He walked with his mother and sister to school each day. He would soak up knowledge like a sponge. The house across the street from Bowers school had a border of lilies. Shirley, the crossing guard, would tell Ethan the dew drops on the day lilies were diamonds. He should pick them up , put them in his pocket and take them to the bank.
He would keep trying to pick them up.
One day, Miss Shirley asked him did he know why day lilies were called day lilies? She explained each flower only blooms for one day.
Ethan took a lily in his little hands and said I will miss you. That brought tears to her eyes.
